Cecil Hinsby Clarke was born on 19th May 1891 in Culford (school register) (Thingoe Q2-1891 4A:791), son of Walter and Ann Golden CLARKE
(née HINSBY).
He was admitted to Culford Voluntary School on 23rd April 1895, leaving on 2nd July 1903. 1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Brockley Hamlet Cottages, Culford with his father Walter CLARKE [50] general smith born Brooke, Norfolk; his mother Ann [50] born Swanton Morley, Norfolk; brothers Walter [25] (general smith) born Brooke, Percy [24] carpenter born Newmarket and Fred [6] born Culford; sisters Daisy [15], Gertrude [13] and Ethel [11] all three born in Culford. 1911 census...Aged 19, a hot water fitter, he was boarding with the REACH family at 47 Wesgate Road, Bury St Edmunds. His parents were still in Culford with his sisters Alice Sophia, Gertrude Violet, and Ethel Ann, and brother Fred (a chauffeur) |

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
Recorded everywhere as dying of wounds there is no indication of why he has no known grave. It is not even possible to be certain on what day he was wounded. The likelihood is that he was wounded during the action of the battalion around Fortuin, just s SE of St Julien.Either he was seen to be wounded and not recovered at the time, or his grave may have been destroyed during later fighting. In any event his name is with over 54,000 others on the Menin Gate.
